Senior Cathrine Madsen fired an even-par 72 to lead the Georgia State women's golf team to a 309 (+21) good for eighth place at the end of day one at the Eat A Peach Collegiate in Macon, Ga.
Madsen's 72 placed her sixth overall after the first round, eight shots back of Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora who carded a first round 70. Madsen's round included four birdies and four bogeys. Her 72 is the second-best score she's posted this year, only trailing the 70 she carded in the final round at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen finished the day with a 78 (+6), good for a 32nd place finish. Senior Sandra Maier came in one shot behind Lorentzen, carding a 79 (+7) for a share of 36th place.
Freshman Ellie Robinson rounded out the team scorecard for the Panthers, putting a eight-over 80 on the board. Junior Iliska Verwey finished the day with an 82 (+10).
Florida State leads the team competition after day one, posting an even-par 288. The Seminoles lead their nearest competitor, Coastal Carolina, by nine shots.
Behind Coastal Carolina are Georgia (+10), Furman (+12), James Madison (+17), Kennesaw State (+19), and UCF (+19). Georgia State is tied with Miami (+21), and leads Augusta State (+25), Mercer (+26), and High Point (+34).
Tomorrow the Panthers will try to climb the leaderboard on the tournament's final day beginning at 8:30 a.m.
