Madsen Earns Top-25 at Palmetto Intercollegiate

Senior Cathrine Madsen shot a 76 (+4) to earn a 17th place finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Kiawah Island, S.C. Tuesday, leading Georgia State women's golf to a ninth of 18 finish.

"Today was a very, very disappointing day," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "Not quite the note I wanted to end the fall season on. We started out really slow and when you get down early like that, it's awful tough to come back."

Madsen earns her fourth top-25 in five events this season. The Herning, Denmark native has found the top-10 three times, including one top-five at the Eat A Peach Collegiate.

The Panthers struggled on the final day, posting a 311 (+23) after getting through first 36 holes in 22-over par at the par 72, 5,916 yard Oak Point Golf Club.

Redshirt sophomore Cherishton Brett, getting her first career start in team competition, counted a career-best 78 (+6) toward the team total. Brett finished in a tie for 91st for the event.

"The highlight of the day was Cherishton's 78," said Mant. "She's definitely won the most imporved player by a bundle. She had a double-bogey on the last hole, so it could have been even better. We're really pleased to see her out there contributing."

Senior Sandra Maier carded a final round 78 (+6), dropping her 10 spots into a tie for 22nd. Maier's finish is her second top-25 of the year.

Freshman Ellie Robinson fired a 79 (+7) and finished 55th to round out the scoring for the Panthers. Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen shot an 83 (+11) over the final 18, dropping her to 48th overall.

In the team competition, Georgia State had risen from a tie for seventh to a tie for fifth over 36 holes, Monday.

Tuesday, the Panthers slipped back down the leaderboard into ninth of 18 after posting their highest final round score of the fall. Strong final round play had been a mainstay for the Panthers during the entire fall season, their previous high a 298 (+10) at the Eat A Peach Collegiate.

East Tennessee State took the team title with a three-round total of 879 (+15). Maryland's Jessie Hollandsworth earned medalist honors with a score of 69-68-76-213 (-3).

Georgia State remains undefeated against Colonial Athletic Association opponents, picking up wins over William & Mary and Richmond.

"Going forward, we need to improve significantly on our short game," said Mant. "Once that happens, I think, everything turns around."

The Palmetto Intercollegiate marks the final round of the Georgia State women's fall season. The Panthers will return to the links on February 14th for their title defense at the Qdoba Collegiate in Miami, Fla.
