Fairfax, Va. (October 24, 2009) The Georgia State men's soccer team (4-7-1, 2-6 CAA) dropped a conference match against region No. 7 George Mason (9-5-1, 4-3-1 CAA), 3-1, Saturday night. The Panthers return home to play they final conference home game against William & Mary Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
Georgia State out played George Mason in the first half of play holding a 11-to-10 advantage in shots including eight on net but Mason keeper Sean Kelley came up with eight saves in the first half of play to deny the Panthers.
In the 40th minute the Patriots were attacking towards the net and after an A.J Sheta shot was stopped by Panther's goalie Vincent Foermer, the rebound came to Victor Freedman who scored his fifth goal of the season to give George Mason a 1-0 lead at half time.
"I felt like we played a solid first half, Mason's keeper had an outstanding game and a four year starter who came up big for them. "We had two great free kicks with one from Brett (Cummins) and the other from Juan (Giraldo) that I felt like we deserved a goal before half time, added Head Coach Kerem Daser."
In the second half George Mason added to they lead scoring a quick goal just under nine minutes into the second half off another save from Foermer leading to the score. Freedman found the rebound again and blasted his sixth goal and second goal of the game to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
Georgia State cut into the lead in the 79th minute when the Panthers were attacking in the offensive zone when a shot was deflected off a Mason defender that went into the net to make the score 2-1.
The Patriots added an insurance goal in the 81st minute off a free kick from Fro Adu to make the final score 3-1. Adu scored his second goal of the season for George Mason.
"In the second half we had more chances but finally scored off an own goal and started to apply more pressure. "Credit to George Mason on taking advantage on our mistakes in our defensive half but I was pleased with the emotion we played with." We had two tough away matches and look forward to coming home to play William & Mary."
"I was really proud of the way my two seniors stepped up and played with great passion. Brett (Cummins) and Stephan (Minyono) really had solid games for us tonight against a great opponent in George Mason, added Daser."
Freshman goalie Vincent Foermer finished the game with nine saves to help keep the game close for the Panthers. Freshman midfielder Gimel Gordon finished the game with five shots including four that went on net but Mason keeper Kelley made the saves. Senior midfielder Brett Cummins took two shots with both being on goal in the loss.
Georgia State returns home this Wednesday night to take on William & Mary in its final home conference match of the season.
