Men's Soccer Canceled Sunday due to Weather

Men's Soccer Falls to VCU, 3-0

Richmond, Va. (October 21, 2009) The Georgia State men's soccer team (4-6-1, 2-5 CAA) dropped a conference match on the road against VCU (4-7-2, 1-5-1 CAA) Wednesday night 3-0. The Panthers will try to rebound on Saturday Oct. 24 when they face George Mason in Norfolk, Va. at 7 p.m.

Georgia State held the VCU Rams scoreless in the first half of play but VCU came out attacking in the second half. One minute and 39 seconds into the start of the second half the Rams received a deflection off the Panthers keeper Vincent Foermer and as Alberto Fonseca scored to make the score 1-0 early in the second half.

Less than two minutes later the Panthers committed a foul inside the box that led to a penalty kick for VCU. Carlos Picado took the kick and scored to quickly put the Rams up 2-0 in the match.

Georgia State had a couple of opportunities in the 51st minute when freshman Peter Vania had a shot on net but Rams goalie Gabriel Rodriquez made the save to keep the game 2-0 VCU. Senior Brett Cummins had another shot but his attempt was blocked by the VCU defense.

In the 58th minute VCU was attacking again when a cross from Thomas Huepper found teammate Phillip Daldrup who headed the ball into the left corner to give the Rams a 3-0 advantage.

Freshman Juan Giraldo lead the Panthers in shots with four including one on goal as the Panthers drop its fifth conference loss of the season. Freshman Vincent Foermer finished the game with six saves to pace the Panthers in goal.

Georgia State returns to action this Saturday when they will travel to Norfolk, Va. to take on George Mason at 7 p.m.
