Senior Cathrine Madsen and sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen tied in seventh place at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C. Tuesday, leading Georgia State women's golf to their first win of the season.
The Panthers successfully defended their 2008 title at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, navigating the par-71 5,939 yard Greenville Country Club to a three-round total of 293-293-293--879 (+27), the lowest three-round total in school history.
Georgia State surpassed the previous record, an 880 at the 2008 U. of Cincinnati Fall Classic, and last year's 882 at the 2008 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate.
The team victory is the Panthers' first since their 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Championship win last April. This marks the 26th victory in school history, the 19th of head coach Cathy Mant's tenure.
Cathrine Madsen fired a final round 74 (+3) to pull even with Charlotte Lorentzen who posted a final round 76 (+5). Madsen posts her third top-10 of the season, the 10th of her career, through four events. Lorentzen picks up the second top-10 of her career, her first this season. Both players posted 220 (+7).
Freshman Ellie Robinson moved up considerably during the tournament's final round by carding a 71 (E) that included an eagle at the par-5 18th. Robinson's final round at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate is the best of her college career thus far, eclipsing a 72 posted at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in September.
The Middlesbrough, England native finished with a share of 18th place, her best career finish, by carding a 224 (+11) and moving up 13 spots on Tuesday.
Junior Iliska Verwey finished in a tie for 15th place after firing a final round 73 (+2) to shoot 223 (+10). Verwey posted both her best finish of the fall and her second-best round of the year on Tuesday.
Senior Sandra Maier finished in 28th place after a final round 75 (+4), giving her a three-day total of 227 (+14).
Georgia State outlasted a charging East Carolina (+29) to win the event by two strokes. The Panthers also pick up wins over conference foes Xavier (+40), James Madison (+49), William & Mary (+57), and Old Dominion (+95).
The Panthers have one remaining tournament in the 2009 calendar year, the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate on Kiawah Island, S.C. next Monday, Oct. 26. where Georgia State will attempt to defend another 2008 crown .
