Belmont 4, Georgia State 3

ATLANTA (Jan. 30, 2009) The Georgia State men's tennis team suffered its third loss of the season to Belmont on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center. The Panthers fell 4-3 after securing three of six singles matches.

“It comes down to fighting for every point and who wants it more,” said head coach Jarod Camerota. “We are looking forward to coming out tomorrow against Radford and fighting hard. We have a chance and we just have to do everything perfect- have a perfect match.”

State opened the day with a victory at No. 1 doubles. Teammates Nejck Podkrajsek and Martin Shishkov quickly downed the doubles duo, Javier Rodriguez and Felipe Cirne-Lima, 8-0. However, Belmont picked up wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots to clinch the doubles point.

Podkrajsek was the first to finish his singles match, evened the score with Belmont and giving the Panthers their first singles point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rodriguez at No. 1 singles. Belmont responded with back-to-back victories at No. 5 and 4. Orlando Battaglia dropped 6-4, 6-3 to Renato Antun at No. 5. Jackson Moore won his first set against Rodrigo Amaral at No. 4, but dropped the final two to give Belmont a 3-1 lead.

Lucas Thomaz put the Panthers back in the hunt and picked up his first collegiate singles victory with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win at No. 6. But Belmont would answer back with a tough 7-5, 7-6 (5) win against Henri Mangin at No. 2 to clinch its fourth point. Martin Shishkov rounded out singles competition winning 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5) at No. 2, but the Bruins had already sealed the victory.

The Panthers will next face No. 69 Radford on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Sharon Lester Tennis Center in Piedmont Park. Match time is 1 p.m.
