Women's Golf in Eighth at Heather Farr

The 34th-ranked Georgia State women's golf team shot an opening round 288 (E) and a second round 304 to finish the first day of play at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in eighth out of 20 places at Omni Interlocken Golf Course in Boulder, Colo. Monday.

Sophomore Sandra Maier led the way with a 68-76 (E), good for 11th place.

“I'm so proud of Sandra,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “All the girls played well, we came out firing birdies.”

Sophomore Iliska Verwey also finished 11th for the day with a 71-73. Senior Claire Starkie shot 74-78 (+8) for 52nd place. Nicole Loesch posted 76-77 (+9) for 55th. Cathrine Madsen carded 75-80 (+11) for 67th.

The Panthers found the afternoon round difficult, as a number of factors began to take their toll. “The afternoon was a struggle for us,” said Mant. “Putting became a little more difficult once fatigue set in.”

Notre Dame leads the team competition with a 288-283 (-5).

In the individual competition, Kay Hoey of CSU-Long Beach and So-Hyun Park of Notre Dame are tied at -8. Hoey shot rounds of 65 and 71. Park carded a 70 and 66.

“I think we've adjusted to the altitude quite well,” said Mant. “We made some putts, but playing out west like this gives us a little different challenge. With the Rocky Mountains in play, and the altitude, shots fly differently, and putts break more.”

The Panthers are scheduled to play the final 18 on Tuesday.
