Women's Golf Wins In Cincy

Iliska Verwey finished as individual medalist and led the 25th ranked Georgia State women's golf team to a team victory at the U. of Cincinnati Women's Fall Classic this afternoon.

Verwey shot a 70 to cap her tournament, which included a school and course record 64. The sophomore from South Africa was one of only two players to shoot under par for the tournament.

Her six-under performance, a five stroke advantage on the field, is good for the third medalist honor of her career. She finished in first at the Myrtle Beach Classic and Lady Jaguar Invitational during her freshman year.

Cathrine Madsen shot a 76 to go with her 74-71 Friday. Madsen's round gave her a third place finish of 221 (+5) for the week.

Sandra Maier capped her tournament with a 77 to finish at 226 (+10) in 10th place. Senior Claire Starkie bounced back from a difficult opening round to shoot the low round of the day with a 68. Starkie's 68 (-4) helped her grind to a 15th place finish.

Nicole Loesch impressed with her third consecutive 78 of the week, including an even-par final nine. Loesch's improved, consistent play earned her a 24th place finish, much needed in the absence of senior Anna Scott.

“I'm really excited for the girls,” said Georgia State coach Cathy Mant. “They played well, kept it together, and made a lot of good decisions that led to birdies. We posted great scores this week.”

The Panthers outdid Augusta State by 16 strokes, and host Cincinnati by 27 to claim the team crown. The margin of 16 is the fourth largest margin of victory in Georgia State history.

The three-round score of 880 ties the all-time Georgia State low, set in 2005 at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate. The victory marks the 19th team title in school history, the 12th under Coach Cathy Mant.

The Panthers will next tee off September 29th in Boulder, Colo. for the Heather Farr/University of Colorado Memorial.
