Second Round Action Suspended for Weather

With play suspended due to inclement weather in the second round, the 36th-ranked Georgia State University women's golf stopped play between the 14th and 18th holes after finishing the first round in second place at the Canes and Cardinals Classic in Miami Lakes, Florida on Monday.

After rain delayed the start of first-round action, the Panthers carded a team score of 293 (+5) to rest in second place after the first round of the 54-hole Canes and Cardinals Classic, trailing only co-host and 27th-ranked Louisville by seven strokes.

“Our girls played great today and hit it the way they're capable of,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “We started the second round in second, an awesome place to be among this field, and we hit some great shots.”

Second-round action began immediately after the first round with a shotgun start. Georgia State teed from between the fifth and eighth holes and played to the 14th through 18th holes before heavy rain and lightening forced second-round action to be delayed until Tuesday.

“The course was already wet after some rain last night,” said Mant. “The girls were playing well today, so you hate to see them have to stop, but we had a lot of rain. One hole was almost unplayable it was so wet, so we'll just have to go out and play well again tomorrow.”

With eight holes of the second round and the 18-hole third round remaining, third-round tee times have been move forward to begin at 7:30 a.m. on the par-72, 6,210-yard layout of the Senator Course at Don Shula's Golf Resort.

Through the first round, redshirt junior Anna Scott sits tied for third after a one-under par 71, while freshman Iliska Verwey is tied for sixth after an even-par 72.

Scott tied for the tournament lead in par-three scoring at one-under par and had 14 birdies, ties for third most in the field. Meanwhile, Verwey, the nation's 35th-ranked player, tied for the second most birdies through round one, with four.

A week after competing as an individual in the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate, junior Claire Starkie returned to State's team lineup and carded a two-over par 74 to claim a tie for 18th through the first round.

Completing State's first-round scores, redshirt freshman Sandra Maier sat in 34th with a four-over par 76, while sophomore Cathrine Madsen tied for 47th with a 77 (+5).

The Canes and Cardinals Classic, co-hosted by Louisville and Miami, features six team from the national top 50 and the event represents State's last competition before the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on April 18.
