Madsen a Champ, Panthers 2nd at CAAs

Georgia State sophomore Cathrine Madsen claimed the individual title at the 2008 CAA Championships with a three-round score of 211 (-5), while the 36th-ranked Georgia State University women's golf team took second overall at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. on Sunday.

After sub-par scores in the each of the first two rounds, Madsen carded a six-birdie, even-par round of 72 to retain her hold on first place and claim the initial championship. The individual victory was the first of Madsen's career.

“It's a bittersweet because you want to win as a team, but I'm really excited for Cathrine,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “She played great for three days in a row. Today, she struggled a bit early, but pulled it together with birdies on the last three holes to win tournament by one stroke.”

Madsen's score of 211 ties the lowest three-round individual score in State's history.

As a team, the Panthers posted a third-round team score of 293 (+5) to finish with a total score of 881 (+17) and finish two strokes behind CAA champion UNC Wilmington (879, +15) who caught the Panthers from behind with a third-round score of 290 (+2) on the par-72, 6,150yard Green Course at the Golden Horseshoe.

“As a team, we played good golf,” said Mant. “Yeah, we left some shots out there, but Wilmington was great and their number four player shot a 68 today. Today, they posted the better scores and we didn't know until the last group was off the last green who won. I'm sad that we didn't win, but I'm not disappointed in my team. They gave it a great effort.

In addition to Madsen's title, three other Panthers finished in the top-10 overall. Redshirt freshman Sandra Maier claimed fifth overall after a third-round score of 74 (+2), while freshman and 2008 CAA Golfer of the Year Iliska Verwey claimed sixth overall with a final round of 71 (-1). Redshirt junior Anna Scott claimed a tie for seventh with a final round of 76 (+4).

Georgia State now waits to see if the team will garner an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals, which begin on May 15.

“Accoridng to what we're hearing, we should be in the Regionals,” said Mant. “We'll see what we can do there.”
