Both sophomore Cathrine Madsen and the 36th-ranked Georgia State University women's golf team lead the field at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championship at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. through two rounds of play.

Led by Madsen's bogey free, three birdie round of 69 (-3), the Panthers posted a second-round team score of 298 (+10) to overtake UNC Wimington for sole possession of first place. Madsen's round of 69 is a career best, topping her previous best of 70 set in yesterday's first round of play.

Madsen currently holds a three-stroke lead on her nearest competitor.

In addition to Madsen's contributions, every member of State's team is currently in the top-10 overall.

“I'm proud of the girls,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “We struggled pretty hard early in the round and the kids fought back. We had our bad round today, but we're in the lead.

“I'm really happy for Cathrine,” added Mant. “She's doing everything well right now. She's hitting, she's putting and it's just coming together. She just needs to keep it going tomorrow and she'll have a chance to win it all and hopefully the team can too.”

Redshirt junior Anna Scott and redshirt freshman Sandra Maier are each tied for third overall after rounds of 77 (+5) and 75 (+3) respectively on the par-72, 6,150-yard Green Course. Junior Claire Starkie and freshman Iliska Verwey, the 2008 CAA Golfer of the Year and Rookie of the Year, are tied for 10th overall with rounds of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7) respectively.

The Panthers, with a two-round team score of 588 (+12) currently hold a one-stroke lead on UNC Wilmington with one round remaining in the 2008 CAA Championships.

The Panthers have won three conference championships in the last five years, including the 2006 CAA Championship in the team's first year in the league. The Panthers received the automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals each year with their best performance an 11th-place showing in 2006.

The Panthers tee off in the final grouping of the third round beginning at 11:06 a.m. The team is paired with UNC Wilmington and third-place William & Mary.
