BOISE (Mar. 21, 2008) Playing short handed, the Georgia State men's tennis team (1-12) dropped two matches at the Boise State Spring Break Tournament on Friday. The Panthers dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 35 Boise State in the first round and fell 4-1 to Portland in the backdraw.
No. 35 Boise State won the match by only playing singles against State without Nejc Podkrajsek and Aleksandar Elezovic at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. With a shorthanded roster, State dropped all four singles matches. Boise State's Brent Werbeck took the first point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Anze Cevka on court 2, closely followed by William Adeimy's 6-1, 6-0 loss to Paul Koenke on court 4. Trenton Spinks and Ross Hopper dropped their matches by at 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4 decision, respectively.
The Panthers went on to compete against Portland in the backdraw after the Pilots fell to Yale in the first round. Doubles were tied, with Portland taking a point at court 1, defeating Nejc Podkrajsec and Alexandar Elezovic 9-7, and William Adeimy and Trenton Spinks taking down Evan Schleining and Joel Kincaid 9-8 (8) on court 2. However, Portland won on court 3 by default, and took the 1-0 lead.
In singles, Podkrajsek earned the Panthers' only point, defeating Joel Kincaid 3-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-8 at No. 1. Elezovic and Spinks were winning their matches at No. 2 and No. 4, but the match was not finished. With two more Panthers falling at No. 3 and No. 5, and a win by default at No. 6, Portland took the 4-1 victory.
The Panthers will take on Nevada on Saturday at 10 a.m. in round 2 of the backdraw.
