Sixth at SunTrust, Two Panthers in Top 15

Georgia State junior Anna Scott and freshman Iliska Verwey each carded third-round scores of 74 (+4) to finish in the top-15 places at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational as State's 32nd-ranked women's golf team posted a third-round score of 299 to finish in sixth at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Florida on Sunday.

Scott, a junior from Consett, England, finished with a three-round score of 219 (+9) to tie for 12th, while Verwey, who ranks 60th nationally, finished one-stroke back (220, +10) to claim 15th. Joining Scott and Verwey with a final-round 74, redshirt freshman Sandra Maier carded two birdies in her third round to move into a tie for 50th on the par-70, 5,907-yard layout.

"The girls played really hard and I'm happy with how we performed as a team," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "Anna [Scott] and Iliska [Verwey] are so close to breaking through and being consistently awesome, but they're still really good right now. Sandy [Sandra Maier] played really well today too. She's been working really hard and has improved, but she is capable of playing even better and we're excited about what she brings our team."

With her final-round 74, Maier moved up 13 spots to tie for 50th along with sophomore Cathrine Madsen who carded a final-day score of 77 (+7) to finish with a total of 233 (+23). Rounding out State's lineup, junior Claire Starkie finished tied for 64th with a three-round score of 238 (+28).

Georgia State posted a three-day team score of 899 (+59) and the Panthers' final-round 299 tied for the fourth lowest team score of the day, but State fell one spot from fifth to sixth as 34th-ranked North Carolina jumped into fifth with a 296. Finishing immediately behind the Panthers were North Carolina Greensboro in seventh (915, +75), 46th-ranked Augusta State (917, +77) and 47th-ranked Oregon (919, +79).

"We played well against a number of top teams and the potential is there to play even better," said Mant. "I think after a long layoff we were a bit rusty, but I think we did great. If we keep getting better each week and work on our weaknesses, we are going to be a great team at the end of the season."

The Panthers return to action in two weeks at the PineHurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C. where College of Charleston will play host beginning March 9. Following the Pinehurst Challenge, State returns home to host the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate on March 31.
