Iliska Verwey finished as the medalist as the Georgia State women's golf cruised to a first place finish at the 20-team Lady Pirate Intercollegiate played at Greenville Country Club in Greenville, N.C., Tuesday.
Verwey shot a 73 (+2) to pass East Carolina's Abby Bools on the leaderboard, taking home the win. Verwey started the day one shot back of Bools, but bested her round by five shots. Verwey posted a final tally of 75-68-73 216 (+3).
Georgia State won the team event by shooting 299-285-298 882 (+30). The Panthers' second round 285 ties the lowest team total in school history, set in 2005 at the Taco Bell Intercollegiate.
“We struggled through the front nine today,” said Georgia State coach Cathy Mant, “but the girls hung together. It was awesome to watch.”
The team victory, and medalist honor, marks the second of the year for the Panthers', and Verwey respectively. Both honors were claimed at the U. of Cincinnati Women's Fall Classic.
This marks team victory number twenty in Georgia State school history. All twenty have come under the tenure of head coach Cathy Mant.
“Having two wins to this point in the season is great,” said Mant. “We're moving in the direction we want to be. We've competed well against some top teams.”
This is the fourth medalist honor of Iliska Verwey's career. She finished first at the U. of Cincinnati Women's Fall Classic earlier this season, and won the Lady Jaguar Invitational and Myrtle Beach Classic during her freshman year.
Sophomore Sandra Maier finished fifth with a 74-70-77 221 (+8).
Junior Cathrine Madsen finished one shot behind Maier at +9 after firing rounds of 74, 73, and 75.
Anna Scott climbed eight spots up the leaderboard from yesterday to finish 12th with scores of 76-77-73 226 (+13).
Nicole Loesch finished strong after a rocky start, shooting 84-74-77 234 (+21). Loesch's 74 ties the best round of her career.
Georgia State finished 17 shots in front of host East Carolina (+47). Miami (Fl.) (+61), Nebraska (+65), and Elon (+68) round out the top five.
Belen Buendia of Florida International, leader after round one, finished one shot behind Verwey at 4-over par. Abby Bools of East Carolina and Chelsea Curtis of Georgetown University both finished a 7-over par, one shot in front of fifth place finisher Sandra Maier.
The Panthers travel, next week, to South Carolina for the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Invitational to be played a Kiawah Island.
