Georgia State men's golf finished the first two rounds of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, Monday, by turning in a team score of 286-278 (+4), behind Allen John's 70-65 (-5), good for seventh place out of the twelve teams in Birmingham, Ala.
Surprising Southern Methodist (No. 128 ranking) sits atop the two-round leaderboard in the team competition at 278-269 (-13). Host No. 10 Alabama is second, No. 39 Auburn sits third, No. 8 UNLV stands fourth, No. 70 North Carolina is in fifth and No. 5 Baylor is one spot ahead of State. State is ahead of No. 46 UAB and No. 52 Memphis, as well as CAA foe UNC Wilmington, plus North Florida and Samford.
Freshman Allen John led the way for the Panthers, firing a pair of 35s for an even-par round of 70 in the opening round. John followed that with an electric 65 (-5). John's 135 puts him in third place at the end of round two, improving 11 spots after the morning round. The 65 is good for the second best score of the tournament thus far, one behind the tournament low of 64.
Tom Sherreard carded a 71-69 (E), leaving him in 20th after 36 holes of play. Alan Fowler finished four shots behind Sherreard with a pair of 72s (+4) to sit in 31st place.
Sophomore Tobias Rosendahl's 73-72 (+5) puts him in 35th place. Finally, Alex Castro's 77-73 (+10) places him 51st.
Auburn's Glenn Northcutt leads the tournament after posting a seven-under par 69-64.
The Panthers will take to the course Tuesday for the conclusion of the final 18 holes of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate.
