Panthers Second in S.C., Verwey Third in Playoff

The Georgia State University women's golf team claimed second overall in the Unlimited Potential/Myrtle Beach Classic after posting a final-round team score of 292 as every Georgia State athlete competing finished in the top-20 places in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday.

Georgia State finished with a combined team score 579 (+3), one stroke behind East Carolina who shot a team score of 287 (-1) to move into first on the final day at Grand Dunes Resort Golf Club, a par-72, 6,136-yard course. East Carolina finished with a combined score of 578 (+2).

“We played a great, but just couldn't do enough to hold off East Carolina who played a great tournament and had an outstanding final round,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant.  “We improved on our short game in this tournament and, after seeing us post consecutive great round, I'm convinced this group is capable of contending in each tournament this year.”

Freshman Iliska Verwey was the Panthers' top finisher and concluded her final round in a tie for first at two-under par (142), but fell to third overall after being eliminated on the second playoff hole in a three-competitor playoff.

Verwey shot a final round score of one-over par 73, but was forced into a playoff by East Carolina's Abby Bools and Amber Littman, who shot final-round scores of 68 and 71 respectively.

In addition to Verwey's tie for first, sophomore Cathrine Madsen finished tied for eighth with a one-over par 145 (72, 73), redshirt junior Anna Scott finished tied for 11th with a 147 (75, 72), redshirt freshman Sandra Maier finished in a tie for 14 with a 148 (72, 74) and junior Claire Starkie shot a 149 to finish in a tie for 19th (72, 77).

Georgia State's fellow Colonial Athletic Association members UNC-Wilmington and Old Dominion finished in sixth and 10th respectively, with team scores of 602 and 619.

The Panthers will take a week off before returning to action at the Jeannie McHaney Invitational in Lubbock, Texas on October 8. Check GeorgiaStateSports.com for updates preceding the tournament.
