The Georgia State University women's golf team finished first-day action in fourth-place overall (+18) at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Ky. and sophomore Cathrine Madsen completed two rounds tied for sixth-place overall at two-over par.
Georgia State posted a team score of 594 to end the day fourth among 17 teams as Madsen posted rounds of 75 and 71. Two other Panthers, sophomore Sandra Maier and freshman Iliska Verwey, finished Monday in the top 20, each tied for 14th at five-over par.
Madsen finished her second round one-under par as the Colonial Athletic Association Second Team member posted five birdies on the par-72 6191 yard course.
"I'm very proud of Cathrine [Madsen] and our team," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "Cathrine was playing ver strong today, and as a whole the team excelled. We had some double-bogeys, but made a lot of birdies. It's tough to go out and play 36 holes in a day, and for some some of the girls this was their first time walking 36 and they have some blisters to show for it, but we're going to go out and try to play even better tomorrow."
Every member of the Georgia State women's golf team improved on their score from the first to second round and as a team the Panthers improved their score by 12 strokes.
The Panthers won the event by 13 strokes in 2005 and currently sit 13 strokes off the lead held by Notre Dame, who is coming off a win at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. last week.
