ATLANTA (Aug. 31, 2007) The Georgia State men's soccer team (0-1) dropped their season and home opener to the University of North Florida Ospreys (1-0) 2-1 Friday afternoon at Panthersville Athletic Complex.
The Panthers jumped on the board 13 minutes into the match when freshman midfielder Brian Forero scored on a cross from midfielder Floreal Pedrazo to make the score 1-0. The Ospreys had a response just five minutes later when Akil DeFreitas found the back of the net to tie the game.
North Florida continued its offensive attack and took the lead after freshman forward Adam O'Neill bent a shot off an assist from senior Oscar Ortiz to push the score to 2-1 before the end of the first half.
State stepped up the second half with a number of scoring opportunities, but could not connect as the Ospreys' defense stiffened and freshman goalkeeper Andrew Calise protected the goal, finishing with four saves.
“It was a disappointing game for us because we got outworked on the field,” stated head coach Kerem Daser. “North Florida played amazing defense and they came out aggressive, and fired up from the start.”
The Panthers hope to rebound as they face Wofford next Friday at 4 p.m. at Panthersville Athletic Complex.
