Compton Pitches Well, but Panthers Fall Late

Continuing a string of great pitching outings from Georgia State's starting pitchers, senior Jeramy Compton took a shutout into the seventh inning, but Old Dominion scored two runs in the seventh and the winning run in the eighth to defeat the Panthers 3-2 in the final game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series in Norfolk, Va.

Compton did not factor in the decision, as he was pulled with one out in the seventh after allowing ODU's first run of the game. The Panthers led entering the seventh 2-0 after scoring a pair in the second. State had the first two runners of the inning on base thanks to Aeden McQueary reaching on a passed ball and Chase Childers legging out a bunt single. As Bradley Logan attempted to bunt the runners over, the throw to first to retire Logan went wildly, letting McQueary score from second for State's first run. Kenny Camp followed with a sacrifice fly to score Childers, giving the Panthers their second run.

For much of the game, it looked like two runs would be all State needed. But after a leadoff double in the seventh and a one-out RBI single, head coach Greg Frady made the move to Adam Bowling out of the Panthers bullpen. Bowling attempted to pick off Gerard Hall from first, but the throw was wild, letting Hall reach third. A sacrifice fly later, the Monarchs tied the game.

In the eighth, ODU scored the winning run off of hurler Kevin Dooley. With two out and a runner on second, Tyler Belcher connected for his third hit of the game with a single back up the middle to score what would prove to be the winning run.

State had an opportunity in the ninth. Logan Sharrett pinch ran for Bradley Logan after a leadoff walk. Pinch hitter Carlos Cardoza-Oquendo sacrificed Sharrett over to second. After a pop out for the second out, Sharrett reached third on a wild pitch. But that would be as close as State got to tying the game, as Eric Suttle struck out to end the contest.

Ryan Bergh earned the win for ODU, giving up five hits and two unearned runs in eight innings of work to improve to 5-5 on the season. Dooley fell to 3-2 with the loss after giving up a run on a hit with two walks in an inning of work. Compton was charged with two runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings of work, while Bowling allowed an inherited runner to score (unearned) but did not allow a run himself in 0.2 innings of action.

State led late in each of the three games of the series, but only won one. Still, that win could loom large in the CAA standings. With a record of 13-14 in the league, the Panthers put themselves in a position where if they win two out of three games next weekend against Towson, they will clinch a spot in the CAA Championships that begin Wednesday, May 23. There are also scenarios with State winning just one game and opponents below losing that would earn a berth for the Panthers back into the CAA Championships.
