Freshman Iliska Verwey finished tied for 11th with a final-round score of 74 (+2) as the 29th-ranked Georgia State women's golf team claimed fifth overall with a final-round team score of 311 (+23) at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, the Panthers' final event of the fall season, at Oak Point Golf Club on Kiawah Island, S.C.
Verwey, who has climbed to 61st in the individual national rankings in her first collegiate season, shot a three-round score of 228 (+12) and jumped from a tie for 19th into the tie for 11th with her two-over par final round performance.
In addition to Verwey's finish, the Panthers' Claire Starkie finished tied for 18th at 14-over par (240) and two other Panthers finished in the top 40 among a field of 104 student athletes to help lead Georgia State to the team's fifth top-five finish in five events this fall.
“We wanted to do a little better this weekend, but we were playing in tough conditions. The course was cold and windy and if you made an errant shot, you're in the water on this course,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “In all, I was real pleased with our results this fall and the good news is I think we're going to be awesome next semester.”
This is the third-straight season the Panthers have recorded four straight top-five finishes in the fall season, but this year's team faced the toughest fall schedule to date.
Verwey, who was coming off an individual title at the America's Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational where State claimed the team title, recorded her fifth top-20 placing in her first five collegiate events.
The Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate featured a 20-team field with 17 teams ranked in the top-100 nationally and seven teams from the top 60 at Oak Point Golf Club, a par-72, 5,933-yard course.
The Panthers will now focus on their schoolwork and practicing leading up to the first event of the spring season, the Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Florida in late February where the University of Florida will play host.
