HANAHAN, S.C. (Sep. 12, 2006) -- The Georgia State women's golf team battled through a tough final round at the Cougar Classic to finish 17th with a third round total of 319 and an overall tournament total of 936 (304-313-319) at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club course in Hanahan, S.C. Florida State took the title with a one-stroke victory over North Carolina, finishing with a total score of 873 to best the 18-team field.
Junior Joanna Klatten led the squad in the third round with a 5-over round of 77 (72-76-77=225). Klatten finished 9-over for the tournament and tied for 32nd individually. Sophomore Claire Starkie (pictured) finished 7-over in the third round with a 77, sophomore Karin Dedering finished with a 9-over round of 81 and freshman Cathrine Madsen finished with a 10-over round of 82. Junior Anna Scott did not compete in rounds two and three because of injury.
"We are a very young squad and we got our feet wet," said head coach Cathy Mant. "Our performance was disappointing but we will be able to take some positives out of it. I think the greens were difficult. It is not what we are used to practicing on and many of our European players don't play on greens like these."
State will look to rebound quickly with the next tournament slated for next Monday and Tuesday Sep. 18-19 at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Ky. The Panthers are the defending champions from 2005.
