AUGUSTA (Nov. 7, 2006) -- The Georgia State women's golf team posted back-to-back 15-over rounds (308-308= 606) in order to claim a first-place finish at the America's Choice Mortgage Lady Jaguar Invitational.
The Panthers finished nine shots ahead of second-place finisher and host school Augusta State and 13 shots better than third-place East Carolina.
State finished with three golfers in the top 10 lead by junior Joanna Klatten, who fell just short on her bid for a first-place finish. Klatten finished in second-place after a 2-over round of 74 in the final round giving her a 3-over total for the tournament. Augusta State's Amanda Smith played lights out with a round of even par to take the one-shot victory over Klatten at 2-over par. Klatten matched her previous best finish of second-place with her last second-place finish coming at the 2006 CAA Championships.
"I am quite happy with the way I played," Klatten said. "I just made one stupid mistake, but it feels really good to finish in second place. It is great that we won. It has been a long time since out last win, so it feels really good."
After firing a final round 69 last week, sophomore Claire Starkie kept her momentum going and matched her career best finish in sixth-place at 8-over par after a final round of 3-over par. Senior Pamela Torres took home her best finish in her career with a ninth-place finish at 12-over par after a final round of 79.
Sophomore Karin Dedering and Cathrine Madsen finished tied for 14th-place at 14-over par. Dedering closed with an 82, while Madsen improved after an 11-over first round to fire a 3-over final round of 75.
"This is a great way to end the fall season and get ready to kick off the spring season," said head coach Cathy Mant. "The thing I am most excited about is that we had four players shoot in the 70s in the final round. We left a lot shots on the course and the greens were really difficult but we are playing much more consistent. I am excited about all the progress, and we are going to take some time off and continue to work on our game."
State finished in front of two teams ranked higher in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Augusta State entered the tournament in 44th-place and Memphis entered ranked 46th. The Panthers should expect a move up after a 107th-ranking.
