Panthers Finish 12th in Kiawah

KIAWAH, S.C. (Oct. 31, 2006) -- The Georgia State women's golf team finished in 12th-place at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate after a final round total of 308, which put the Panthers at 58-over for the tournament.

The Panthers finished ahead of four teams ranked ahead of them in the Golfweek/Sagarin Poll at 108. Maryland (57), Wisconsin (73), Colorado (60) and Costal Carolina (85) all finished behind State's 12th place finish.

Sophomore Claire Starkie turned in the best round of her short career at Georgia State firing a final round score of 69, which earned her a tie for sixth place. Starkie posted her career best three round tournament total with a 219 along with her second top 10 finish.

Junior Joanna Klatten finished tied for 50th after a final round score of 78. Senior Pamela Torres finished tied for 58th after a final round of 84. Freshman Cathrine Madsen finished tied for 73rd after a final round of 77. Sophomore Karin Dedering finished 84th after a final round of 85.

"The thrilling part of the day was the 69 shot by Claire Starkie," said head coach Cathy Mant. "I am real proud of her and her contribution to the team."

State began the day finishing their second round, which was postponed Monday due to darkness. The Panthers concluded their best round of the fall season with a 297 total. Starkie finished completed her round under par with a 71, Torres finished with a 74, Klatten shot a 75, Dedering finished with a 77 and Madsen shot an 80.

"The second round was terrific," Mant said. "We were actually 2-over par as a team when play was suspended. We had a tough time getting it going this morning. But we set a goal to break 300 and we reached that goal. We were able to post some good numbers and we had a number of different people contribute."

The Panthers have one more event scheduled for the fall, which will be close to home in Augusta, Ga. at the America's Choice Mortage Invitational starting Nov. 6.
