STATESBORO –Georgia State buried a barrage of 13 three-pointers to tie their single-game record and outlast in-state rival Georgia Southern 88-83 in triple-overtime at the Hill Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Playing at the Hill Convocation Center for the first time in series history, Georgia State (8-10, 2-5 Sun Belt) shot 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from three, tying their single-game record set in their 78-59 win over Furman in 2020 and their 107-49 win over Sewanee on December 8 earlier this season. The Panthers avenged their earlier home loss to Georgia Southern (9-10, 2-5 Sun Belt) on January 8 to earn the season split and will face Coastal Carolina at the GSU Convocation Center on January 22 at 6:30 p.m.
Four Panthers scored in double-figures in the record-tying performance, led by 21 points from Crystal Henderso, who shot 8-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from three, including the record-tying trey with 3:15 left in the second overtime.
Mikyla Tolivert, battled through early shooting woes to score 16 of her 20 points in the second half and overtime combined and led the Panthers with eight rebounds while recording four steals and three blocks.
Kaleigh Addie scored 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 5-of-7 from three, and
Mya Williams scored 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and 3-of-6 from three, including the game-tying three-pointer with 34 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
On the defensive end,
Mahogany Matthews tallied five blocks to bring her season-total to 46. The graduate student from York, Pa. entered the contest ranked first in the Sun Belt and top-20 in the nation for blocks (7
th nationally) and blocks-per-game (11
th nationally).
The game was tied 76-76 after two overtimes when baskets by
Crystal Henderson and
Mahogany Matthews gave GSU a four-point lead with 3:38 left. The Panthers led by one with 42 seconds left when
Mikyla Tolivert came up with a crucial steal and made a lay-up with 12 seconds left and increase their lead to three. A three-pointer by Bukky Akinsola with seconds left was off the mark as
Patience Williams grabbed the rebound, forcing the Eagles to foul, and Henderson made both of her free throws to ice the game and secure the win for the Panthers.
Shanti Simmons and McKenna Eddings led Georgia Southern with 22 points and 20 points respectively
