ATLANTA - Georgia State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Sophia Mooney as the Assistant Softball Coach for its renowned softball program, head coach Becca Mueller announced.
"I'm so excited to be bring Sophie back to Atlanta," Mueller said. "Her passion for Georgia State is evident and her will to win is just what we need for our pitchers to be dominant on the mound."
Mooney brings with her a wealth of experience and a distinguished career both as a player and a coach, making her an invaluable addition to the coaching staff.
"Her playing career speaks for itself as we hope to bring that championship level mindset to our players each day," Mueller said. "I couldn't think of a better fit for this program and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the development of our pitching staff."
Mooney joins Georgia State University following an illustrious collegiate softball career marked by exceptional achievements. Most notably, Mooney was recognized during the 2024 season with prestigious honors including selection to the D2CCA Southeast All-Region Second Team, NFCA Southeast All-Region First Team, and Peach Belt Conference All-Conference First Team. Her outstanding performance also earned her a place on the 2024 TUCCI/DII NFCA Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist, highlighting her impact and leadership on the field.
Prior to her coaching role at Georgia State, Mooney's achievements as a player were equally impressive. In 2023, she was named the NCAA Division II Championship Most Outstanding Player and was instrumental in her team's success as a member of the NCAA Division II Championship All-Tournament Team. Mooney's consistency and talent were further recognized with her selection to the 2023 NFCA All-American Third Team, 2023 D2CCA Southeast All-Region Second Team, and 2023 NFCA Southeast All-Region Second Team. She was also a key contributor to the 2023 Peach Belt Conference All-Conference First Team and the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team, showcasing her dedication and skill throughout her collegiate career. Additionally, Mooney was named Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week in March 2023, underscoring her impact both on and off the field.
Mooney's passion for softball began in high school, where she excelled as a varsity starting pitcher throughout her four-year tenure. Her impressive achievements include being named to the first team All-Region, first team All-County, and earning GADC All-State honors. Mooney's standout performances and leadership helped lead her high school team to multiple Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite 8 game.
