Georgia State Wins Rebound Battle in 58-43 Win over Campbell

ATLANTA, GA --The Georgia State women's basketball team out-rebounded the Campbell Camels 38-32 on the way to a 58-43 victory at home Thursday.

The Panthers (5-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Mahogany Matthews, who had 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Kaleigh Addie added 12 points from the bench and Mikyla Tolivert chipped in as well with 11 points.

Georgia State pulled down 38 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Campbell's 32, led by Matthews' eight boards.

The Georgia State defense held Campbell shooters to only 28.8 percent from the field, including 25.9 percent from three-point range. The Panthers also kept Olivia Tucker to 1-of-14 shooting and three points in the game. The Camels did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored four second chance points while Georgia State pulled down 31 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-4, Georgia State went on a 7-0 run with 5:50 left in the first quarter to take an 11-8 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-11.

Georgia State then cut the Camels lead to 26-25 before going on a 6-0 run to take a 31-26 lead. The Camels cut into that lead, but the Panthers still enjoyed a 31-29 advantage heading into halftime. Georgia State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Georgia State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 38-34 before going on a 13-0 run, punctuated by a three from Addie, to expand its lead further to 51-34 with 1:24 to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Georgia State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 20 total points.

The Panthers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its seven points in the paint.
