Delmonte Named as Sandy Panthers' Assistant Coach

ATLANTA— Georgia State head beach volleyball coach Beth Van Fleet has announced the hiring of Maddy Delmonte as assistant coach of the Sandy Panthers for 2023-24. A standout for the GSU beach program from 2019-2023, Delmonte joins the Sandy Panthers' staff having wrapped a stellar five-year career that saw the Virginia Beach, Va. native chart 90 career victories and finish ranking second all-time in wins for the program's history.

Delmonte helped the Sandy Panthers secure inaugural conference championships in consecutive years for the 2022 and 2023 spring seasons. Earning the 2022 Conference USA Championship title and the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championship title, GSU would receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in Gulf Shores in back-to-back seasons.

In 2023, Delmonte earned All-Sun Belt Conference Second-Team honors for the spring after reeling off 12 consecutive victories alongside teammate Ayla Johnson and earning back-to-back Sun Belt Pair of the Week honors to close the season. Delmonte paired with Johnson for every match, as the duo recorded wins over nationally ranked opponents nine times on the year.

Delmonte and partner Johnson were also named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team for 2023 following an unbeaten mark with four straight-set victories in tournament play.

Also highlighting Delmonte's career was the team's NCAA Championship run in 2022 that saw the No. 10-seeded Sandy Panthers knock off No. 7 Grand Canyon followed by No. 2 TCU to advance to the NCAA Round of 6. Partnering with teammate Eden Hawes in all but one match for the 2022 spring, Delmonte downed nationally ranked opponents nine times on the year, including No. 1 overall ranked UCLA and No. 2 overall ranked TCU.

The historic season in 2022 would see Delmonte help lead the Sandy Panthers to a school-record 28th win, with the upset victory over No. 2 TCU marking the largest upset in NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship history. The win also served as the first second-round victory in NCAA Tournament play throughout the history of GSU athletics across all sports, and tied the school record for highest-ranking victory in GSU athletics history.

The team's No. 7 ranking for the final AVCA Coaches Poll in 2022 marked the highest finish in a Division I Collegiate Poll for any team in the history of GSU athletics.

Delmonte began her career at GSU being named to the CCSA All-Freshman Team in 2019 after charting 23 wins for the Sandy Panthers at the first and second flights. To pair with the athletic achievements, Delmonte received academic merit for all five years while studying at GSU, including President's List or Dean's List Honors for every semester attending the university.

Delmonte also earned CCSA and C-USA All-Academic Team honors for 2021 and 2022 respectively, and was named to the CSC Academic All-America® Women's At-Large First Team for 2022-23. The honor is awarded to student-athletes across all sports and at all levels that exemplify excellence both on the field of play as well as in the classroom.

Delmonte earned a Master of Science in Exercise Science at GSU in May 2023. Prior to completing her master's degree, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in August 2021.

Prior to arriving in Atlanta, Delmonte played indoor volleyball for Ocean Lakes High School in her hometown of Virginia Beach, where she helped the team to conference and region championships, and was named Second Team All-Conference in 2016. Delmonte was named Offensive Player of the Year while competing with the EnFuego Beach team for prep, and was named to the National Honors Society as well as the Honor Roll for all four years of high school.

The daughter of Christopher and Marie Delmonte, the veteran Sandy Panther carries on a family legacy of athletic achievement. Along with her father, Christopher, running cross country at the Naval Academy, Delmonte's uncle, Greg Landry, was an All-Pro NFL Quarterback that played 11 seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Continuous supporters of their daughter and her student-athlete success, Delmonte's parents attended nearly every match throughout the Sandy Panther's five-year career.
