Sandy Panthers Receive 2023 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Honors

ATLANTA— The Georgia State beach volleyball team has received the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for 2022-23, as announced by the organizations on Thursday. In addition to the award, the Sandy Panthers also earn the prestigious Honor Roll distinction for representing the top 20 percent of team grade-point averages in Division I collegiate beach.

Head beach volleyball coach Beth Van Fleet has guided the GSU beach team to USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award honors for 10 consecutive seasons dating back to 2014. The Sandy Panthers wrapped another impressive semester in the classroom this past spring by posting a combined team GPA of 3.74.

The USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams of all divisions and levels that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale. The distinguished Team Academic Honor Roll celebrates programs in the top 20 percent of team GPAs for each respective division.

1,332 collegiate and high school volleyball teams earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for 2022-23, marking an all-time record number of programs honored for academic achievements.
