Georgia State long-snapper Jack Bernstein, who joined the program as a walk-on last fall, was awarded a scholarship in a surprise announcement by head coach Shawn Elliott at halftime of the Panthers' Spring Game.
Bernstein was mobbed by his teammates when the announcement made.
The rising sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., began last season as a backup but was pressed into service when starter Seth Glausier was injured early in the game vs. Coastal Carolina. He immediately stepped in, and handled the job efficiently the rest of the season.
"That's a lot of pressure on a young man, to step in like that," Elliott said. "Our backup long-snapper, I promise you, doesn't get many reps in practice.
"He came here as a walk-on, worked hard, and took advantage of the opportunity when he was called upon. He's earned this scholarship."
