Giving Back on MLK Weekend

ATLANTA -- Giving back to the community is a key component in head coach Jonas Hayes' Georgia State men's basketball program, and Hayes and his team put that into action on the Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend.

Hayes and members of the team and staff spent several hours working with young people at the "Protecting the Dreams of our Youth" event put on by the Emerging 100, the young professional auxiliary of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta.

Giving back to the Atlanta community is especially meaningful for Hayes, an Atlanta native and a product of the Atlanta Public School system, including Douglass High School.

"Everybody can be a leader if you have a heart willing to serve," Hayes said, borrowing from the words of Dr. King.

"Being from this community and being the head coach of the program in my hometown has allowed me to give an example to my team of what servant leadership looks like."

Coming off a 100-66 victory over Coastal Carolina last Saturday, the Panthers hit the road this weekend for games at Old Dominion (Thursday at 7 p.m.) and Georgia Southern (Saturday at 3 p.m.).
