Panthers Open Sun Belt Conference Tournament Play Tuesday Against Georgia Southern

The Sun Belt Conference Championship begins Tuesday in Mobile, Ala. Georgia State will be the seventh seed and will open the tournament by facing Georgia Southern, the 10th seed, in a single-elimination game on Tuesday, May 10 at 2 p.m. ET at Jaguar Field.

The winner of that contest will advance to the double-elimination bracket and face No. 2 seed and host South Alabama Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Georgia State's top hitter is junior infielder Bailee Richardson, who ranks sixth in the Sun Belt with 10 home runs while leading the team with a .323 average and 37 RBI (fifth in Sun Belt). Sophomore catcher Carolyn Deady has been heating up lately, including two homers in the last three games to give her nine on the season.

The Panthers have shattered the school record with 111 stolen bases on the season to rank second in the Sun Belt and top 15 in the nation. Leading the way on the basepaths is junior Daisy Hess with 27 thefts, also the GSU season record. Hess (T-1st), Emily Brown (T-3rd, 22) and Chloe Middlebrooks (T-3rd) are all among the top five in the conference. Middlebrooks also ranks No. 2 in the nation in times hit by pitch (20).

The pitching staff features Emily Buck (7-7, 3.78), Emily Hodnett (4-4, 4.08) and Hallie Adams (5-12, 4.08).

The Panthers (19-31, 9-15 Sun Belt) closed out the regular season with a win over Georgia Southern (13-33, 6-18 Sun Belt) last Saturday in Statesboro. Carolyn Deady hit a 3-run homer and Hallie Adams pitched a complete game in the 4-3 win. The Eagles won the season series, two games to one.

For the second year in a row, Georgia State and Georgia Southern are meeting in the first-round of the Sun Belt Championship after finishing the regular-season against each other. Last year, the Panthers eliminated the Eagles with a 4-1 win.

Georgia State is playing in the Sun Belt Championship for the seventh time and has a record of 8-11 in the event.

Head coach Angie Nicholson, in her first year at Georgia State, is an 18-year veteran head coach with 441 career victories.

All 16 tournament games will be nationally broadcast on ESPN+.
