Panthers Host First Place South Alabama For Weekend Series

The Sun Belt Conference softball series between South Alabama and Georgia State, scheduled for this weekend in Atlanta, will not be played due to unforeseen circumstances.

ATLANTA – Winners of four of their last five games, the Georgia State softball team will welcome first-place South Alabama to the Bob Heck Softball Complex for three games this weekend.

Georgia State (12-17, 3-3 Sun Belt) has moved into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings after taking two-of-three games from Appalachian State last weekend. The Panthers will be concluding a season-long eight-game homestand beginning Friday when the Jaguars come to town.

South Alabama (12-14, 5-1 Sun Belt) has opened league play red hot earning series wins over UT Arlington and Texas State following a challenging non-conference schedule.

The Jaguars lead the all-time series 14-8 and took two-of-three the last time the two teams met in 2019.

Junior Bailee Richardson continues to lead Georgia State with a .326 batting average to go along with nine home runs, 27 RBI, and a .685 slugging percentage. She leads the Sun Belt Conference in home runs, runs batted in, and total bases, while also standing among the top 10 in slugging percentage, hits, and total plate appearances.

Under first-year head coach Angie Nicholson, Georgia State has been aggressive on the basepaths, ranking No. 11 in the nation (second in Sun Belt) with 2.31 stolen bases per game. Emily Brown leads the conference with 16 stolen bases which ranks No. 20 in the nation. Daisy Hess has added 14 stolen bases which ranks No. 32 in the NCAA.

Six different pitchers have started in the circle for the Panthers, led by Emily Buck with a 4-4 record and a 3.06 ERA in 14 appearances.

First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m., with 1 p.m. start times set for Saturday and Sunday. Following play this weekend, the Panthers will take to the road to face Troy April 1-3.
