Richardson and Allen Lead Softball to Split with Western Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Junior Bailee Richardson provided the power and fellow junior Julia Allen pitched a complete game in the nightcap to lead the Georgia State softball team to a split at Western Carolina on Wednesday afternoon.

Richardson hit a pair of home runs during the doubleheader and helped Georgia State (2-5) snap a five-game losing streak in the second game of the day.

Allen allowed just four hits in the second game to snap a three-game winning streak for Western Carolina (5-2).

"It was nice to face two great pitchers today," head coach Angie Nicholson said. "It was even better to see Julia Allen come in and close the first game and then throw a fantastic complete second game. Very proud of Alice Thomas battling at the plate and coming through with the game winning hit for us as well!"

Game 1: Western Carolina 5, Georgia State 1
Savannah Rice (2-0) proved too much for Georgia State to overcome in the first game of the Wednesday doubleheader. Rice led Western Carolina in the circle pitching 6.2 innings, allowing just five hits and one run. She added a pair of home runs and drove in all five runs for the Catamounts.

Rice got Western Carolina on the board first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. She hit her second home run of the game, a three-run shot, in the bottom of the third to give the Catamounts a 5-0 lead.

Richardson, who entered the game batting .444, hit her second home run of the year in the top of the sixth, cutting the Panthers deficit to four, but unfortunately the Panthers could not get any closer.

Freshman Emily Hodnett (1-1) earned the start for the Panthers and allowed two runs on just one hit in 2.0 innings, but walked four before giving way to Hallie Adams who went 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits. Allen closed out the game for the Panthers pitching 2.0 innings of hitless relief.

Game 2: Georgia State 2, Western Carolina 1
Julia Allen (1-0) went the distance in the second game allowing just one run and four hits over 7.0 innings. She struck out two and walked just one to lower her ERA to 0.78 on the season.

After four scoreless innings, Western Carolina struck first on a Natalie Henry home run to center field.

However, in the top of the sixth, Richardson hit her second home run of the day and third of the season to tie the game.

In the top of the seventh, freshman Alice Thomas drove in Daisy Hess with what proved to be the winning run and give the Panthers a 2-1 victory.

Georgia State is now 12-2 all-time against Western Carolina.

Georgia State will have the weekend off before returning to play at Georgia Tech next Wednesday at 5 p.m.
