Nicholson Welcomes Trio to Softball Program

From L-R: Skylar Chavez, Samara Ortega, Jackie Gonzalez
ATLANTA – Head coach Angie Nicholson announced the addition of three student-athletes to the GSU softball program this week, welcoming outfielder Skylar Chavez and infielders Jackie Gonzalez and Samara Ortega to Atlanta.

Chavez and Gonzalez both played under Nicholson at Hampton in 2020. Ortega is an incoming freshman from Fountain Valley, Calif.

"I am really looking forward to adding these three young ladies to our family," Nicholson said. "Sky and Jackie both had a great start to their freshmen seasons with me over at Hampton before things were cut short due to Covid. I am very excited about their futures here at Georgia State and their overall IQ and abilities to play multiple positions on the field."

"Samara, being a true freshman, has played at a high level and again brings a great glove and high IQ to the table. She is a hard worker and just wants to get better. All three will make us better overall as they will push and challenge for spots on the field. I can't wait to get them with the rest of the team on the dirt!"

Chavez is originally from Orange, Calif., and played her high school ball at Villa Park. Chavez was impressive in her freshman season for the Pirates, leading the team in average, runs, stolen bases, on-base percentage, and slugging. Chavez hit .352 with 13 stolen bases and 27 runs scored through her first 19 games before the season was cut short due to Covid-19. She was named the Big South Freshman of the Week on March 1.

Gonzalez played for Mater Dei in Orange County, Calif. She started her Hampton career with a hit in each of her first seven games in 2020. Gonzalez hit .246 with 11 RBI and six stolen bases in the shortened season. She was named Big South Freshman of the Week on Feb. 16.

Ortega committed to Hampton out of Fountain Valley H.S. where she played primarily on the left side of the infield. Ortega was selected to play on the USSSA Far West All-American Team and was a four-year varsity scholar-athlete. She was named a recipient of the Sunset League Sportsmanship Award and earned Second Team All-Sunset League honors in 2019 alongside the Offensive Player of the Year recognition.
