SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Led by one of the strongest first rounds in program history, the Georgia State men's golf team leads following 36 holes of the Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
Georgia State shot an opening round 11-under 277, tied for the seventh lowest first round score in program history, and followed it with an afternoon 2-under 286 to sit at 13-under par and in control of a two stroke lead over Western Carolina entering the final round of play on Tuesday.
The Panthers have three golfers among the top 10 after day one of play. Freshman Maxence Mugnier led the way with rounds of 69 and 71 to stand at 4-under par and tied for fifth. Senior Egill Gunnarsson is just one stroke back at 3-under par and tied for seventh following rounds of 70 and 71. Fellow senior Josh Edgar is just another stroke back at 2-under par and alone in 10th following rounds of 68 and 74.
Georgia State leads the field in Par 4 scoring (4.06) and was tied for second in Par 5 scoring (4.50). The Panthers are tied for the most pars through 36 holes (108) and second in birdies with 39.
The two-day, 54-hole event is the Panthers final regular season event before starting preparations to win a ninth conference title when the Sun Belt Conference Championship gets underway later this month in Arkansas.
