MUNCIE, Ind. — Georgia State men's golf closed out the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational with a strong final two rounds, finishing tied for seventh at the three-round event at Delaware Country Club.
The Panthers carded a 54-hole total of 858 after rounds of 297, 280 and 281. Georgia State rebounded from its opening round by shooting even-par 280 in the second round and 1-over 281 in the final round to climb into a tie with Bowling Green. Cade O'Connell led the way for the Panthers, finishing third individually at 4-under 206. After opening with a 2-over 72, O'Connell moved into red figures with a 1-under 69 in the second round before delivering the Panthers' best round of the tournament on Sunday.
O'Connell fired a 5-under 65 in the final round, the lowest round by a Georgia State golfer during the tournament, to surge into third place. He finished just three strokes behind individual champion Logan Sutto of Butler, who posted a 7-under 203. EYInvite_FinalResults
Cameron Jackson was Georgia State's next finisher, tying for 21st at 4-over 214. Jackson improved in each round, posting scores of 73, 71 and an even-par 70 in the finale.
Matthew Calhoun tied for 39th at 8-over 218, highlighted by a 2-under 68 in the second round. Hugh Hollingsworth finished tied for 61st at 12-over 222, while Griffin Latimer rounded out the Panthers' lineup tied for 82nd at 16-over 226. EYInvite_FinalResults
Competing as an individual, James Baxter finished tied for 56th at 11-over 221. Baxter opened the tournament with an even-par 70 before rounds of 76 and 75. EYInvite_FinalResults
Georgia State's final two rounds were among the stronger performances in the field, with its 280 in round two tying for the second-lowest team score of the round and its 281 in the finale tying for the third-lowest score of the final round. The Panthers improved by 17 strokes from their opening-round 297 to their second-round 280.
The Panthers head up I-75 to participate in The Scrappy at Cobblestone, hosted by Kennesaw State, on Oct. 12-13.
