Cobb Named to College Football Playoff Selection Committee

IRVING, Texas – The College Football Playoff (CFP) Management Committee has appointed Charlie Cobb, athletics director at Georgia State University to the CFP Selection Committee, it was announced today by Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the CFP.

Cobb will replace Terry Mohajir, who recently left Arkansas State University became the new athletics director at the University of Central Florida, completing the final year of his term.

"Charlie will be a welcomed addition to our committee," Hancock said. "His knowledge and experience as a former student-athlete as well as his leadership of the football programs at Appalachian State and Georgia State have prepared him well for this role.  As we welcome Charlie to the group, we also want to take this opportunity to thank Terry for his good spirit and positive influence during his two years as a member of the committee and wish him all the best in his new role at UCF."

Charlie Cobb has served as athletics director at Georgia State since 2014. During his time in Atlanta, the school has opened multiple new facilities, while student-athletes maintained a grade point average above 3.0. Among Cobb's biggest projects has been a $50 million transformation of Turner Field, the former Major League Baseball venue, into the home of Georgia State football.  On the field, the Panthers have garnered unprecedented success as football earned its first-ever appearance in a bowl game in 2015 and bowl berths in four of the last six years. The men's basketball program has earned a spot in the NCAA tournament in three of the last five seasons.

Before returning to Atlanta, Cobb spent nine years as the Director of Athletics at Appalachian State. Previously he worked for six years with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, and the Georgia Dome, before returning to his alma mater, North Carolina State as senior associate athletics director for external operations in 1998.

Cobb was a four-year letterman as an offensive lineman on the football team at NC State. He graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1990 and earned a master's degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992.

The CFP selection committee is responsible for selecting the top four teams in the playoff and assigning them to semifinal games as well as ranking the other top 25 teams. The committee meets in-person beginning late in the football season and produces a ranking of the top 25 teams each week leading up to its final selections.
