Panthers Late Run Tops Coastal Carolina 71-68

GSU scores final eight points of the game

Jalen Thomas came up just shy of a double-double for a second-straight game.
Box Score ATLANTA-Georgia State scored the final eight points of the game to top Coastal Carolina 71-68 on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.

Georgia State (8-2, 2-1 Sun Belt) trailed Coastal Carolina (9-3, 3-2 Sun Belt) 68-63 with 2:50 to play in the contest before holding the Chanticleers scoreless the rest of the game.

The Panthers returned to the court after missing three games due to COVID-19 protocols and practicing just once before Saturday's game. Georgia State played without the services of starting guard Kane Williams.

Senior Corey Allen led the Panthers with 15 points, while redshirt-junior Justin Roberts and freshman Collin Moore each scored 14 points. Sophomore Jalen Thomas just missed a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds, while fellow big man Eliel Nsoseme finished with six points and 10 boards.

Coastal Carolina was led by DeAnthony Tipler who scored 21 points going 7-of-9 from 3-point range, while DeVante Jones added 16 points, but went just 4-of-13 from the floor.

Coastal Carolina got off to a quick start taking a 12-3 lead just over five minutes into the game as the Panthers made just one of their first 10 shots.

A 3-pointer by Evan Johnson cut the Chanticleers lead to 15-12 following a 7-0 run, but Coastal came right back and following a 6-0 run, led 30-19 with just over five minutes to play in the half.

Following the slow start, Georgia State knocked down 13 of its last 21 shots in the opening half, shooting 45.2 percent before going into the locker room. The hot shooting was capped by a 9-0 run, including a 3-pointer by Moore and back-to-back 3-pointers from Roberts to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 36-35 lead.

After Coastal scored the first basket of the second half, Georgia State responded with an 8-0 run, including another 3-pointer by Moore to take a 44-37 lead.

The Chanticleers responded with a 9-0 run of their own to retake the lead 46-44 with 13:50 to play. Pushing the run to 19-4, Coastal led 56-48 with 10:50 to play in the game, at one point making six straight field goal attempts.

Trailing by as many as nine with 8:16 to play, Georgia State responded and after 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions by Allen and a jumper by Thomas, tied the game 62-62 with 5:18 to play.

Coastal went back ahead by five before the Panthers finished the game with the final eight points.
