Behind the Mask: Get to Know Lily Barron

Lily Barron overcomes the challenges of balancing soccer and being a nursing major.

ATLANTA -- Fifth-year senior Lily Barron has appeared in 44 matches for the Georgia State women's soccer team while balancing a grueling school schedule as a nursing major.

Barron redshirted her freshman year after an injury before playing in 13 and 14 games as a sophomore and junior, respectively. Last season Barron made 17 appearances including nine starts. She finished with 14 total shots and matched her career-high of four shots in a single contest against Kennesaw State on Aug. 25.

While being a productive member of the soccer team, Barron had to balance practices and games with academic duties from being a nursing major.

"As a nursing major, clinical days and hours are chosen for you which could potentially get in the way of practice and games," Barron explained. "Being organized and communicating with my professors and coaches has been imperative. Making up practice or weights on days I have clinical as well as making up tests on days we may be traveling for games has to be communicated and set up in advance, so again planning and communication has been very important."

Barron is from Newnan, Ga., and played at Northgate H.S. Her mother, Miriam, was a cheerleader here at Georgia State. Barron knew she wanted to make it work between nursing and soccer before she arrived to GSU in 2016.

"I was always interested in going into the medical field and nursing can be used in so many different ways," Barron said. "Nursing gives you the opportunity to connect with patients and you're able to make a strong impact on a complete stranger's adversity is why I chose nursing."

Barron has not only made it work, but she's excelled in the classroom. She's been named to the Dean's List six times and the President's List once.

"My goal after college is to pass the NCLEX and hopefully before then I will figure out exactly what area of nursing I want to go into," Barron said. "As of now, I'm thinking labor and delivery or something with dermatology, and potentially getting my masters as a nurse practitioner."

Barron and the women's soccer team will be the No. 2 seed at the Sun Belt Championships in Foley, Ala., Nov. 4-8.
