Former Golfers Alex and Max Herrmann Set for U.S. Amateur Championship

ATLANTA – The Georgia State men's golf team will be well represented when the 120th USGA U.S. Amateur Championship begins on Monday at Bandon Dunes Golf Club in Bandon Dunes, Ore., as former Panthers Alex Herrmann and Max Herrmann tee off in the premier amateur golf championship.

A total of 264 players are competing on the West Coast representing 37 states and 32 different countries around the world. The Bandon Dunes and Bandon Trails courses will be used for the stroke-play portion of the competition on Monday and Tuesday, while the top 64 competitors will move onto match play on the Brandon Dunes course beginning on Wednesday.

The Herrmann twins, from Woerthsee, Germany, graduated from Georgia State in 2018. The pair earned nearly every honor possible during their four years at GSU.

Alex was a three-time All-Sun Belt First Team member while earning President's List honors (GPA of 4.0 or above) every semester at Georgia State. He was also named a 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team member. He won the 2017 Mobile Intercollegiate and led the Panthers to the 2017 Sun Belt Conference Championship and an NCAA Regional appearance.

Max earned 2016 All-Sun Belt First Team honors after winning the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Individual Championship. He too earned President's List honors every semester at Georgia State and like his brother was a two-time Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar. He too was a part of the NCAA Regional team that competed at the LSU University Course.

The pair become the first Panthers to reach the U.S. Amateur since 2008 which ended a decade where Georgia State was well-represented in the championship. Dave Womack (2008 and 2001), Ben Taylor (2006), Steven Tiley (2006), Ty Harris (2004 and 2003), as well as Jonathan Fricke (2002) all represented Georgia State in the country's top amateur golf event.

"I'm incredibly happy to see both Alex and Max getting an opportunity to play in this year's U.S. Amateur Championship," said head coach Chad Wilson. "Both represented Georgia State as best as they could while competing for us and each continues to do the same today after graduating. All of the Panther Family will be cheering them on in Oregon next week."

With no qualifying for this year's event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the brothers qualified for the event based on their Men's World Amateur Golf Ranking as the top 25-ranked players 25 and older using the WAGR Age Filter as of June 24, 2020 allowed for an exemption into the championship.

Alex will tee off for Round 1 on Monday on the Bandon Trails course at 2:35 p.m. ET, with a Round 2 tee time of 10:22 a.m. ET on the Bandon Dunes course on Tuesday. Max is scheduled to tee off for Round 1 on the Bandon Trails course at 12:12 p.m. ET, with a 4:25 p.m. ET tee time on the Bandon Dunes course for Round 2.

Notable champions of the event include Bobby Jones, Francis Ouimet, Chick Evans, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Deane Beman, Phil Mickelson, Lanny Wadkins, Craig Stadler, Jay Sigel, Mark O'Meara, Hal Sutton, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Bryson DeChambeau.

After 18 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, match play with the Round of 64 will begin on Wednesday. The round of 32 and Round of 16 will take place on Thursday, with the quarterfinal matches coming on Friday. After the semifinals on Saturday, the 36-hole championship match will take place on Sunday.
