Women's Soccer Leads Food Drive to Help Those in Need

The Panthers donated more than 200 pounds of food along with cash donations.

ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's soccer team spent the month of June collecting donations for Atlanta Community Food Bank as part of the Soccer United Against Hunger initiative supported by Soccer United Coaches.

The Panthers collected more than 200 pounds of food in addition to cash donations. ACFB estimates that the food would provide about 175 meals for those in need and the cash donation would provide a further 940 meals.

"The Atlanta Community Food Bank's need has significantly increased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,'' said Kyle Waide, President and CEO of Atlanta Community Food Bank. "We are thankful for the support of the Georgia State University Panthers which will help us fill the meal gap across our community by providing food to those in need during this time of crisis."

The efforts were led by rising sophomore Maria Howell and rising freshman Ana Diaz.

"I first heard about the food drive in May when Coach Joyce sent me the link to Soccer United Against Hunger page and explained that it was a nationwide effort among the soccer community," Howell said. "I was immediately interested because of my desire to contribute to the cause. At the time I was quarantining with my family and, like many of my teammates, starting to feel the effects of isolation. I knew there were people in my community struggling but I didn't know how to help."

Diaz noted the community's willingness to help those in need.

"During the collection process I noticed and was pleased by the efforts of my community in helping out those in need even during these economically testing times," Diaz said. "I believe that as long as people have the means to give and help others, it should be done."

#GSUnited is more than a hashtag. It embodies the spirit of the Georgia State community to give back to Atlanta.

"#GSUnited means a community of different minded people, with different backgrounds, coming together to live in harmony. It means one city equals one team. Atlanta is the celebration of different cultures, a forum for change and home to the strong-minded youth working for a better tomorrow," Howell said.
