Georgia State student-athletes achieved the highest grade point average in program history with a combined 3.40 GPA for the spring semester, with every team attaining 3.00 or higher, also a first at GSU.
 
The 3.40 semester GPA betters the Panthers' previous high of 3.30, set in the spring 2017. Combined with a 3.19 GPA in the fall, Georgia State's student-athlete population posted a 3.29 GPA for the 2019-20 year, the highest figure on record for any academic year.
 
The top performing Georgia State team is beach volleyball, which posted a 3.93 GPA for the spring semester. That follows a 3.99 semester in the fall, giving coach Beth Van Fleet's program an eye-popping 3.96 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year.
 
Beach volleyball was just ahead of the women's cross country program with a 3.93 GPA for the spring semester and the 2019-20 year.
 
The top men's program is men's soccer, coached by Brett Surrency, at 3.69 for the spring and 3.62 for the year.
 
Georgia State's most improved team is the men's basketball program under first-year head coach Rob Lanier. The Panthers recorded their highest semester GPA ever with a 3.08 for the spring, giving Lanier's squad a 3.01 for the 2019-20 year, also a record for the basketball program.
 
The GSU football team reached the 3.00 mark for the second time under head coach Shawn Elliott, just missing its record of 3.03 set in spring 2017. Half the roster achieved a 3.0 or higher.
 
The women's softball team, coached by Roger Kincaid, also had its best semester ever with a 3.82 GPA.
 
A record 250 individuals earned academic honors with a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher. That includes 57 student-athletes--another all-time-high--who achieved President's List recognition for the spring, Georgia State's highest academic distinction signifying a semester GPA of 4.0 or higher.
 
Another 107 individuals attained Dean's List status with a semester GPA of 3.5-3.99, and 86 student-athletes made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with a 3.0 or higher.
 
"We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes for their hard work and focus during this unprecedented time," Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb said. "Tremendous credit also goes to our coaches and academic staff for coordinating so many moving parts to support our student-athletes and allow them to excel."
