NEW ORLEANS
– Due to the concerns surrounding the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Sun Belt Conference has announced that regular-season competitions and conference championships in all sports are suspended indefinitely.
This decision was made in consultation with the league's Presidents, Chancellors and Directors of Athletics to protect the health and wellness of student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans.
Additionally, effective Monday, March 16, 2020, all University System of Georgia institutions will temporarily suspend instruction for two weeks to allow time for USG institutions to test their business continuity plans and online instruction modules and for state officials to continue to assess the current situation regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) in Georgia.
Statement from Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb
"Today, like much of this week, was tough if you're a fan of college sports. Most times we focus solely on the outcomes of games, and while those are incredibly important, for most of us who played, coached, and/or work in athletics, the relationships and stories created by our student-athletes, coaches and staff members are what sustain us. Late this afternoon, in an impromptu meeting with our softball team to discuss the road ahead for them, I was reminded about the beauty of what we do. As the meeting closed, we celebrated the great news that senior Caitlyn Ray was recently admitted to graduate school to study communication and science disorders as she is studying to be a speech therapist. So while there is frustration, sadness, confusion in what is transpiring, I was reminded the true spirit of college sports."
