Behind the Mask: Charlie Flint

CHARLIE FLINT | Long-Snapper | Pembroke, Ga. (Bryan County HS)

Charlie Flint picked up long-snapping by accident.

"Nobody else wanted to snap in middle school, so that's when I stepped in. I thought I'd give it a shot. I actually snapped the ball with one hand," he explained.

"When I got to high school, they told me to put my other hand on the ball. And the rest is history.

"I kinda just did my own thing in middle school and got the ball back there, but Coach Nesmith, my freshman year, was the one who told me to put two hands on the ball."

Like many long-snappers, Flint viewed this skill as his ticket to college football.

"I was actually an all-region offensive tackle in high school. But I was on the smaller side, so I figured if I wanted to play in college, long-snapping was the way to go."

But his journey almost didn't happen.

"I had a couple of offers from schools that were across the country, but I wanted to stay in state. Late in my senior year, I sent a last-minute DM to Coach [Chris] Collins after I realized that Georgia State didn't sign a long-snapper. He checked out my film and then offered me a preferred walk-on spot. This was a month after signing day, so it was a great opportunity."

Flint, a redshirt sophomore, is now in his second season snapping for field goals and extra points. Sophomore Seth Glausier handles the snapping for punts.

Flint attended Bryan County High School in Pembroke, Ga., near Savannah. He describes Pembroke as "a small little town that has a couple of thousand people, one stoplight and a couple of gas stations." But he actually lives in the even smaller community of Ellabell, a "suburb" of Pembroke that Flint says is comprised of "about three neighborhoods and a gas station."

"Pembroke is known for being the home of Adam Lane, who was Mr. Georgia in 2009, and that is literally it," says Flint, who added that he doesn't have much in common with this bodybuilder. "I take pride in the Dad Bod."

Because of the proximity of his hometown to a certain school "down south," Flint particularly enjoyed the Panthers' comeback victory over Georgia Southern.

"Probably my most favorite victory at Georgia State. I would put it ahead of Tennessee," he said.

"I dual-enrolled at Georgia Southern my senior year in high school. All my teachers went to Georgia Southern, my grandma went to Georgia Southern, my brother went to Georgia Southern for a semester. I was planning on going there as a student because football wasn't really in the picture until that last minute DM.

"After the game, I messaged all my former coaches and teachers and friends."

Away from football, Flint enjoys playing golf, especially with teammates Aubry Payne and Tucker Gregg. Admitting that he shoots in the low 90s, Flint says, "For as much as I play, I should be better!"

He also holds a part-time job at a nearby golf facility, and through that he has been able to hit golf balls with the likes of Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young, basketball legend Julius Erving and rapper Lil Yachty, among others.

Another off-the-field activity for Flint is his involvement with Georgia State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, of which he serves as Vice President.

He worked closely with tennis player and SAAC President Andrei Duarte and other SAAC members to put together last month's social justice rally.

"To be able to put something like that into action was very gratifying," Flint said. "It was great to give everyone a chance to be educated and a chance to talk about their experiences."

Describing the unique culture of specialists, including kickers, snappers and holders, Flint says, "I think specialists as a whole are in our own little group. At the end of the game, we go shake hands with the other team's specialists. We follow each other on Twitter. We just kind of gravitate towards each other because we're all specialists."
