Playing For Family

Leading up to opening night of the 2020-21 Georgia State men's basketball season, each member of the roster will be featured on a different day with a story, video, and social media elements. We continue the series today with Collin Moore who enters his freshman season in a Panther uniform.

For many athletes, the biggest influences in their lives come in the form of their family. For some, playing the sport they love hopefully becomes a profession and a way to give back to those who sacrificed so much for them to succeed. Collin Moore understands both of those things all too well which is why he challenges himself everyday to get better and to be the best he can be so that one day he has the opportunity to give back.

"Growing up in North Little Rock was kind of a struggle," Moore said. "My mom, she was a single parent raising five kids of her own, so I kind of had to grow up early."

His mom Wanda, along with siblings Shekinah, Messiah, Kyle, and Corban, mean the world to Collin, which is why early on, he realized what he needed to do to reach his dreams.

"I was always the type of kid that wanted to get out of the house instead of staying in," Moore said. "I'm not a big video game player. I just don't want to stay inside. I would much rather go to the gym.

"Honestly, my family has been my biggest influence on me playing basketball. They are my motivation right now. They are still back at home kind of struggling, but they are still doing great."

Although Collin now has his sights set on the basketball court, it was actually another field of play that he dreamt of and thought would be the path to helping his family.

"Football was really my first sport that I played," Moore said. "I always had a dream of going to the NFL. I got introduced to basketball in the second grade. My cousin and uncle got me started and told me I was going to be good so I might as well keep playing. I kept playing and it has now led me to Georgia State.

"Growing up, I wasn't always good. When I got to the 9th and 10th grade is when others started to show some love for my game. People started asking questions about who I was and where was I from. For some it kind of came out of nowhere."

As basketball season gets ready to tip off in less than a week at Georgia Tech, Moore and his teammates know the challenges ahead of them, not just on the court, but also facing a 100-year pandemic. Just as he has faced challenges in the past, he is looking forward to taking them head on – and definitely won't just be sitting on the couch watching.
