Panthers Rally for 76-73 Win Over South Alabama

Box Score ATLANTA-Georgia State held South Alabama with a field goal for nearly nine minutes of the second half and overcame a nine-point second half deficit to top the Jaguars 76-73 on Thursday night at the GSU Sports Arena.

Redshirt-junior Corey Allen led Georgia State (15-7, 8-3 Sun Belt) with 19 points and four rebounds going a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line while junior Kane Williams finished with 15 points and five assists including a key jumper to give the Panthers the lead with 30.7 seconds to play.

Georgia State won for the 15th-straight time at home, tied for the third-longest home court winning streak in school history. The Panthers have won 22 of their last 23 home games after going 25-of-33 at the line on Thursday night.

South Alabama (12-11, 5-7 Sun Belt) was led by Andre Fox who scored 20 points off the bench, while Josh Ajayi added 15 points and six rebounds.

The Jaguars went ahead 73-70 as part of a 7-0 run before the Panthers scored the final six points of the game. After Williams jumper with 30.7 seconds to play gave GSU the lead, Nelson Phillips knocked down two free throws with 10.2 seconds remaining to secure the win. Phillips finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Jaguars had one last shot but Allen wisely fouled Herb McGee with 3.4 seconds to play. McGee missed the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, but the Panthers came away with the rebound to run out the clock.

"It was a hard-fought win and I am proud of the guys," head coach Rob Lanier said. "In the last couple of games we have displayed a belief in ourselves and it has showed the character of these guys to find a way to win. Credit to South Alabama as they fought hard throughout the game."

South Alabama took an early 6-0 lead and led by as many as seven as the Panthers turned the ball over six times in the first five minutes.

Georgia State cut the Jaguar lead to two, 11-9, with 12:30 to play, as South Alabama went more than five minutes without a field goal.

The Panthers took their first lead, 26-24, with just over five minutes to play as Justin Roberts knocked down a 3-pointer and after being fouled knocked down the free throw. Roberts finished the game with 11 points.

After South Alabama went back ahead 30-28, Georgia State responded with a 6-0 run capped by a Williams' 3-pointer to take a 34-30 with 2:08 remaining.

Georgia State went into the locker room with a 38-35 lead after shooting 15-of-20 from the free throw line in the opening half.

After the Panthers pushed the led to five to start the second half, South Alabama responded with a 14-3 run to take a 49-43 lead with 15:15 to play. Minutes later the Jaguars pushed the lead to nine, 61-52, with just under 11 minutes to play before the Panthers started to mount a run.

Georgia State responded with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 61-58 with 9:04 to play and minutes later tied the game at 64 on a Roberts jumper and made free throw. With 4:28 to play Georgia State retook the lead 66-64 on a Phillips fast-break lay-up.

Trailing by four, South Alabama used a 7-0 run to go back ahead 73-70 with 1:34 to play before the Panthers made one last run.

Freshman Jalen Thomas came off the bench and finished with eight points and four rebounds, while junior Josh Linder added five points and five boards.

After making 15 3-pointers at South Alabama two weeks ago, Georgia State was held to just seven on Thursday night.
