Roberts' Seven 3-Pointers Leads Panthers to 84-62 Win Over ULM

Box Score ATLANTA-Georgia State won its 14th-straight home game shooting 57.7 percent from the floor while making 13 3-pointers to top ULM 84-62 on Saturday afternoon at the GSU Sports Arena.

Georgia State (12-6, 5-2 Sun Belt) was led by redshirt-sophomore Justin Roberts who finished with 23 points going 8-of-10 from the floor including seven 3-pointers. The Panthers have now won 22 of their last 23 home games.

Tyree White just missed a double-double for ULM (6-10, 2-5 Sun Belt) with 21 points and nine rebounds but lost for the third-straight time and have now lost six of its last seven games in the GSU Sports Arena.

Redshirt-junior Corey Allen added 18 points and five rebounds while senior Damon Wilson filled up the box score with 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds for the Panthers.

After leading by just five points at halftime, Georgia State outscored ULM 33-11 to start the second half and led by as many as 27 midway thru the final 20 minutes.

"Good win and I'm proud of the guys as this has been a long stretch of five games in 10 days," head coach Rob Lanier said. "To get home and earn back-to-back wins and play well is big for this group. Today we had 18 assists on 30 field goals which is a pretty good indicator that we are getting better and sharing the ball well."

After ULM scored the first basket of the game, the Panthers went on an 8-0 run as Roberts and Allen both knocked down 3-pointers in the first two minutes.

The Warhawks held Georgia State scoreless for more than three minutes to tie the game 14-14 before the Panthers responded with a 7-0 run to take a 21-14 lead with 10:23 to play in the opening half.

Georgia State pushed the lead into double figures for the first time, 34-23, with 4:52 to play, on a pair of free throws by Joe Jones III.

The Panthers went into the locker room leading 37-32 as Roberts finished the opening half with 14 points as Georgia State shot 52.2 percent from the floor and 6-of-13 from 3-point range.

On Roberts' sixth 3-pointer of the game, Georgia State took a 50-36 lead with 16:01 to play as part of an 8-0 run, causing ULM to call its first timeout of the second half.

Minutes later Kavonte Ivery knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers as part of a 9-0 run to give the Panthers a 63-39 lead with 12:05 to play, causing ULM to call its third timeout. Ivery added four rebounders in 17 minutes off the bench.

Lanier would clear the bench with just under five minutes to play with the Panthers shooting over 60.0 percent from the floor at that time.

Sophomore Nelson Phillips came off the bench to add 11 points, while Kane Williams scored seven points and dished out five assists.

The Panthers shot 62.1 percent in the second half while going 7-of-10 from 3-point range.

JD Williams added 14 points for the Warhawks while Michael Ertel was held to just 10.

Notes:
  • Georgia State improved to 9-8 all-time against ULM.
  • The Panthers have won six of the last seven match-ups with the Warhawks in the GSU Sports Arena.
  • Georgia State, the back-to-back defending Sun Belt Conference tournament champions have compiled an 83-36 league record since rejoining the league in 2013-14.
  • With a 3-pointer last time out, Georgia State has made at least one 3-pointer in 766 games dating back to Feb. 18, 1995.
  • Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Panthers have won 146 games, the most of any NCAA Division 1 program in the state of Georgia.
Georgia State will return to the road for its next three games beginning Thursday at South Alabama. Tip is set for 8 p.m. ET in Mobile and can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on WRAS-FM 88.5.
