Panthers Win 3-2 to Take Series Over Mavericks

ATLANTA - Emily Soles and Savannah Freeman combined to hold UTA to two runs Sunday as Georgia State took the series over the Mavericks with a 3-2 win at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.

Freeman got the start and allowed one run on four hits through 4.0 innings of work. Soles threw the final three innings and gave up a run on five hits.

Georgia State scored three runs on just three hits, getting some help from a pair of errors by UTA. All three of GSU's runs came in the bottom of the fifth.

Down 2-0, Kristin Hawkins led off the inning with a single up the middle. Alyssa Brumelow hit a grounder to third base, but the UTA fielder's throw to second was off the mark, allowing Hawkins to advance safely. Both runners then moved up a bag on a wild pitch.

After Kalynn Hicks drew a walk, Jess Neadow came on to pinch hit and brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to right. The next batter, Arden Jobe, hit a grounder to third base. Brumelow's pinch runner, Olivia Davis, got caught in a pickle between third and home, but an errant throw allowed Davis to score safely and allowed Hicks to move up to third.

Hicks then came home to score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Caitlin Ray.

The Mavericks threatened in the top of the seventh, but Soles escaped the jam to preserve the lead and get the win, her second of the season.

Georgia State recovered the win the series after dropping Game 1. The Panthers will next visit Mercer to play the Bears Wednesday evening.
