Softball Drops Sunday Contest to Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Georgia State was defeated 5-1 at Samford Sunday afternoon to wrap up the Samford Classic. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.

The Panthers got strong pitching performances from starter Savannah Freeman and reliever Mandy Chance as the duo combined to allow just one Samford hit through 4.2 innings. Samford finally broke through with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead.

Georgia State had multiple chances on offense, but was unable to find the big hit and stranded 10 runners on base. The lone run for the Panthers came on a sacrifice fly by Remington Hasty in the top of the third.

Baylee Sexton continued her strong weekend going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Over four games this weekend at the Samford Classic, Sexton went 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate with a double, two RBI, and four runs scored. She was also a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts.

The Panthers will play their first home game of 2019 Wednesday at 5 p.m. as No. 9/10 Georgia visits the Bob Heck Softball Complex. Admission and parking are both free.
