Women’s Soccer to Face Coastal Carolina in Opening Round of Sun Belt Conference Tournament

Four-seed GSU to face five-seed Coastal Carolina 8 p.m. ET Wednesday

ATLANTA – For the second consecutive year, Georgia State women's soccer will open the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with a matchup against Coastal Carolina. The Panthers secured the five-seed and will face the fourth-seeded Chanticleers 8 p.m. ET Wednesday night at the Foley Sports Complex in Foley, Ala.

Ed Joyce's club enters the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the league, as Georgia State (8-8-2, 5-4-1 SBC) finished the regular season on a four-match win streak, including three shutout victories. Senior forward Brooke Shank has netted three goals in the team's final four contests and ranks tied for sixth in the Sun Belt with three-game winning goals against conference opponents.

Freshman forward Jimena Cabrero leads the Panthers with five goals and two assists for 12 total points this season. Her five goals are tied for the 10th-most among all players in the Sun Belt, four of which are game-winning goals – tied for the second most in the conference.

GSU enters the SBC Tournament in similar fashion as last season, as the Panthers finished the 2018 regular season on a 5-0-1 unbeaten streak and squared off against three-seed Coastal Carolina in the opening round. Shank netted the game-winner in the 94th minute to secure a 3-2 overtime victory over the Chanticleers and punch her team's ticket to the semifinals.

Coastal Carolina (7-8-2, 5-4-1 SBC) wrapped up the regular season on a two-match win streak, knocking off Arkansas State 2-1 before shutting out ULM 1-0 on Sunday. The Chanticleers enter the tournament averaging 15.1 shots per game against conference opponents, the second-highest mark in the league. CCU is led by Sunny Sigurvinsdottir and Hannah Miller, who have each tallied six goals on the year.

The two teams will take the pitch against one another for the second time this season, as Coastal Carolina defeated GSU 2-0 on Oct. 11 in Conway, S.C. Both of the Chanticeeler's leading scorers, Miller and Sigurvinsdottir, notched second-half goals to boost CCU to the victory. The loss snapped Georgia State's two-game win streak over the Chants.
